Canva is a great place to design. Lots of people already have their logos, event graphics and slogans sitting in a Canva account, so it makes sense to ask: can I just lay out my whole gang sheet there? You can. It takes some care, and there are a few traps that catch people out. This guide walks through the Canva method step by step, then explains why a dedicated gang sheet builder is usually the faster option.
What a gang sheet needs to be
A gang sheet is one long piece of DTF film with lots of designs packed onto it. The printer prints the file exactly as you send it, so the file has to meet a few rules:
- The right size. The canvas must match the sheet you are ordering, for example 42 x 100cm.
- Enough resolution. Print files should be 300 DPI at the final printed size. Anything lower can look soft or pixelated.
- A transparent background. Anything that is not transparent gets printed, including white boxes around your designs.
- Space between designs. You need a small gap so each transfer can be cut out cleanly.
If you are new to the idea, our guide on what a gang sheet is covers the basics.
How to make a gang sheet in Canva
- Create a custom size design. Choose "Custom size" and set the units to pixels. To get 300 DPI, multiply each side in centimetres by 118. A 42 x 59cm sheet becomes about 4961 x 6969 pixels.
- Check Canva will allow it. Canva limits how large a design can be in pixels. Small and medium sheets fit, but long sheets such as 42 x 200cm at 300 DPI run well past what Canva allows. For those, you would need to split the layout into several files.
- Add your designs. Upload your artwork or place elements you made in Canva. Use high resolution PNG files with transparent backgrounds wherever you can.
- Size each design to its real print size. Use the position panel to set widths. At 300 DPI, 118 pixels equals 1cm, so a 25cm wide front print should be about 2950 pixels wide.
- Arrange and space. Leave roughly 5mm to 1cm between designs. Rulers and guides help keep things tidy.
- Export as PNG with a transparent background. Tick the transparent background option when downloading. Note that this setting is a Canva Pro feature, so free accounts will export with a solid background.
Common Canva problems
Most issues come from resolution and backgrounds rather than the design itself.
- Stretched small images. A logo that was 500 pixels wide will look blurry when scaled to 25cm. Canva does not warn you about this.
- Hidden white backgrounds. JPGs and some uploaded PNGs carry a white box. On a dark tee, that box prints.
- Canvas size limits. Long rolls do not fit in one file, which means splitting and re-checking every piece.
- Wasted space. Hand arranging dozens of shapes rarely packs as tightly as it could, and you pay for the whole sheet.
- Semi-transparent effects. Soft shadows and low opacity layers can print as faint, patchy areas. Solid colours print best.

Why a gang sheet builder is faster
A builder is made for exactly this job, so the fiddly maths is handled for you. In the Mocked Up gang sheet builder:
- You pick your sheet size first, and the canvas is set up correctly at 300 DPI.
- You can upload PNG, JPG, SVG or WEBP files, or pull them straight from Canva, Google Drive, Dropbox, OneDrive, iCloud and more.
- The builder checks DPI and flags overlaps, so you know before ordering if a design is too small for its print size.
- Auto Build packs your designs onto the sheet for you.
- The Add Text tool lets you put names or slogans on without leaving the page.
- You can save a sheet and reopen it later.
The upshot: keep designing in Canva if you like it, then send the finished designs into the builder to do the layout. You get Canva's design tools and a correctly built print file without the pixel maths.
Canva method vs builder at a glance
| Task | Canva | Gang sheet builder |
|---|---|---|
| Set canvas to 300 DPI | Manual pixel maths | Automatic |
| Long sheets (42 x 200cm and up) | Needs splitting | Single sheet |
| Resolution warnings | None | DPI check on every design |
| Packing designs | By hand | Auto Build |
| Transparent export | Canva Pro only | Built in |
Is there a free gang sheet template?
People often search for a gang sheet template to download. A template only gives you the outer size. It does not check your images, space them or pack them. Using the builder is free until you order, so it works as a live template that also checks your work. If you would rather skip layout altogether, have a look at our prebuilt gang sheets.
