If you run a DTF print shop on Shopify, a gang sheet builder is one of the most useful things you can add. Instead of customers emailing files and you arranging them by hand, they build the sheet themselves, pay at checkout, and you get a file ready to print. This guide covers how it works, what to look for in a builder app, and how to get one live on your store.
What a gang sheet builder does
A gang sheet is a single piece of DTF film with lots of designs packed onto it. Customers pay for the sheet size, not the number of designs, so the more they fit on, the better value they get. If you are new to the idea, our guide on what a gang sheet is explains it in full.
A builder is the tool that lets customers make that sheet on your website. They pick a size, upload their artwork, drag it around, resize and duplicate it, and check out. Without one, you are stuck doing layout work for every order, answering "will this fit?" emails and fixing low quality files after the fact.
What to look for in a gang sheet builder app
Not every builder handles the parts that matter to a print shop. These are the features worth checking before you install anything.
- Auto-nest. Packing designs tightly by hand is fiddly. Auto-nest arranges uploads for the customer, which saves film and saves them time. Customers should still be able to move things manually if they want a specific layout.
- DPI checks. Low resolution artwork prints blurry. A good builder warns the customer when a file is too small for the size they have stretched it to, before they pay, not after.
- Overlap checks. Designs that overlap get cut through or wasted. The builder should flag overlaps so nothing gets lost.
- File types. Customers send all sorts. Look for support for common formats like PNG, JPG, SVG and WEBP.
- Production file output. This is the big one. You want each paid order to arrive as one clean, print-ready file at 300 DPI, not a pile of separate uploads you have to rebuild.
- Native checkout. Customers should pay through your normal Shopify checkout so orders, payments and shipping all stay in one place.
- Pricing model. Check whether the app charges a monthly fee regardless of sales, or only when you get orders. For a newer or seasonal shop, paying per order keeps costs tied to income.
- Setup effort. You should not need a developer. Look for something you can install and configure yourself.
How to add one to your Shopify store
With our Gang Sheet Builder app, the process is short:
- Install the app from the Shopify App Store.
- Pick the product you want to turn into a gang sheet. This could be an existing listing or a new one.
- Set your roll width and pricing so the builder knows the printable area and what to charge.
- Go live. The builder appears on the product page. Most shops are set up in minutes, with no developer needed.
From there, customers upload PNG, JPG, SVG or WEBP files, arrange them or use auto-nest, and the built-in DPI and overlap checks catch problems as they go. They check out on your store as normal. Every paid order arrives as one 300 DPI production file in your Shopify admin, ready to send to the printer.
Pricing and running costs
The Gang Sheet Builder is free to install with no monthly fee. You pay per order, so if a week is quiet, so is your bill. It is the same builder that runs Mocked Up's own store, so it is used on real production orders every day.
When you set your own prices, think about film and ink cost per metre, your press and packing time, and what local customers expect. Our guide to gang sheet sizes and pricing shows how we structure ours as a reference.
Tips for a smooth launch
- Add a short "how it works" section on the product page so first-time customers know what to do.
- Link to artwork guidance so people upload good files. Our guide on artwork for DTF printing is a handy reference.
- Place a test order yourself and print the file, so you know exactly what lands in your admin.
- Be clear on turnaround and shipping, as that is often the first question customers ask.
